The contestants prepare for the 160 oz prime rib challenge at Ward's.
Downtown Milwaukee’s very own Ward’s House of Prime, 540 E. Mason Street, will be featured on a special episode entitled, “Big Beef Paradise” on the Travel Channel this Wednesday at 8 p.m. CST.
According to producers, the food show will feature the best places in the country to get big slices of beef, and it will include Ward’s chefs cooking up delicious cuts of choice beef, an interview with owner Brian Ward, and footage from a Prime Rib Eating Contest Ward’s recently hosted. The contest included 3 contestants trying to eat a humongous 160 oz (yes, 10 pounds) cut of prime rib in less than an hour.
The first contestant ever to set a Prime Rib record at Ward's was Dane Kasper.
In early 2010 Dane Kasper decided he wanted to eat 40 ounces of Prime Rib. At the time this size cut of meat was not offered on Ward’s menu so Executive Chef Bill Baumann happily carved the gigantic slab of meat for Dane, and the rest is, well, history. Dane conquered the 40 ounces and thus, “The Baby Dane” was born. Dane would later return to take down “The Great Dane,” 106 ounces of cooked to perfection Prime Rib to earn another spot of Ward’s menu and its “Wall of Fame.”

Ward’s “Wall of Fame” currently pays tribute to 9 previous customers who have conquered eating enormous portions of prime rib. Their caricatures are on the restaurant’s wall and their names are also featured on the Ward’s prime rib menu. The following prices were accurate at the time this blog was posted and prices are subject to change without notice.
- 40 oz –The Baby Dane $63
- 64 oz – The Big Bugalski $88
- 72 oz – The Amazing Alyssa DiGilio $99
- 88 oz – The Mighty Lind $111
- 96 oz – The Legendary Halaka $122
- 106 oz – The Great Dane $133
- 125 oz – The Holy Schmit $155
- 160 oz – Al-Mighty Halaka $218
- 168 oz – Awesomefat – The Michael Litman Experience $230
So, did anyone finish the 10 pounds of meat?
We can tell you that one person did conquer the massive cut in just 31 minutes and that one person decided to eat an additional 8 ounces of meat beyond the contest requirements to earn the rights to be included in the restaurant’s Wall of Fame.
The “Big Beef Paradise” episode is also scheduled to air at 11 p.m. on December 21 and at 6 p.m. on December 25 (Christmas Day).

The Third Ward’s Soups On (221 N. Water St.) announced this morning that the restaurant will be closing after nine years in business.
The restaurant made the following announcment vis its facebook page:
“Soup’s On is closed. Mary’s retired. Thanks for the nine years of your patronage. I’ve enjoyed serving and and everyone of you. Have a great 2012!”
This isn’t the first time a restaurant announced its closing via social media. Just last Wednesday we learned of the closing of Marchese’s Olive Pit via its Facebook page.

Earlier today I learned that Steve Goretzko, the owner of Bay View’s Sven’s European Cafe and Sven’s Organic Coffee Co. finalized and signed the papers to take over the old Steamer’s Coffee location Downtown at 624 N. Water St.
Steamer’s recently closed its doors this past October.
Steve tells me you can expect to find the same great menu as he offers at his Bay View local. Sven’s serves a hearty breakfast and lunch menu all day long. On the menu you’ll find hot and cold sandwiches, bountiful salads, several daily soups, a case full of fresh bakery, and of course a large selection of coffee and tea drinks.
The new location will serve breakfast and lunch to cater to its Downtown neighbors. The new location is slated to open March 1, 2012. Please stay tuned to MilwaukeeFood.com for more information.

Alterra Bay View meets at the intersections of Kinnickinnic, Howell, and Lincoln avenues. Photo: Alterra
We first told you about Alterra’s plan to relocate its current bakery/commissary operations, and open a new cafe in the Bay View neighborhood last November. This week, Alterra announced on its website that shovels broke ground this past Friday and construction has begun on the site of the new Café and Bakery.
In May, the Maritime Bank building was razed to make way for the new project. Alterra says that a significant portion of the razed structure will either be reused or reclaimed. In addition to making use of recycled materials, the Alterra Bay View project also highlights water conservation through a number of innovative features. For example, Runoff water from the roof will be stored and used to water landscaping surrounding the building.

Additional elements of the project include a focus on improved pedestrian access, sheltered vertical bike parking, “swing set” outdoor seating, and a new bus shelter designed with multi-modal commuters in mind.
Construction of the 15,000 sq. ft building is slated for completion by June 1, 2012 with plans to have a roof in place before snow falls this year.
The first Alterra cafe opened in 1994 and today the company operates eleven cafes.

In my opinion, the Philly Way serves the best Philly cheese steak in Wisconsin.
The Philly Way, a popular the cheese steak shop in Walker’s Point has closed its Cudahy location at 5430 S. Packard Ave. after being open for less than a year.
This was owner Dave London’s third attempt at expanding his philly cheese steak empire.
If you recall, Mr. London opened his second location Downtown at 222 West Wells St. in November, 2008, and unfortunately closed that location in late-2009. This location currently houses Finch’s Corned Beef.
The Philly Way in Walkers Point remains open and is doing brisk business.

Update: August 23, 2011 at 8:58am:
Sobelman’s Pub and Grill posted on its facebook page today that the Sobelman’s @ Marquette sold 470+ burgers on the first day.
August 22, 2011 at 10:58am: Today, Dave and Melanie Sobelman will expand their burger empire when they open the door at their third restaurant, Sobelman’s @ Marquette.
Dave and Melanie have a come a long way since they met back in 1993 and married in 1994. In 2001 the couple opened their first restaurant, Sobelmans Pub and Grill inside one of Milwaukee’s original Schlitz taverns at 1900 W. St. Paul Ave. Sobelman’s would become a Milwaukee staple for the place to go for Milwaukee’s best burger.
In 2009, Dave and Melanie opened their second reaturant, Sobelman’s Tall Grass Grill. This location focuses on healthier burgers made from 100% grass-fed beef.
Today, Sobelmans @ Marquette at 1601 W. Wells St. opens inside the space that housed Angelo’s Pizza Restaurant and Bar for over 50 years. Angelo’s had been a staple on the Marqutte campus since 1956. Angelo’s had a great run up until the end when it served its last customer in October, 2010.
According to a post from OnMilwaukee.com on October 11, 2010, Marquette had posted the following statement on its main Twitter account; ”Angelo’s owner (is) retiring and asked MU to purchase. Gyros (located in same building at 1607 W. Wells St.) will continue to lease. MU (is) working on (securing an) operator for pizza business.”
Sobelmans @ Marquette will be open Monday-Saturday from 11am-12am (food til 11pm) and Sunday from 11am-10pm. Dave Sobelman tells me that he plans to stay open til bar time Thursday-Saturday starting some time in Septemebr when they get their liquor license.
