This Sunday Sobelman’s Pub and Grill will collect toys for Milwaukee’s House of Peace.

Free burger gift cards will be awarded to the first 100 donating a toy and are limited to one gift card per person.

Toys should have a value of at least $15-20 and be appropriate for children 13 and Under. The toy must also be new, in its original packaging and unwrapped.

Will someone finally take down Mulligans 7.5 LB. monster burger challenge that has a record of 87-0? Yes, that means 87 people have tried and failed.

The 7.5 LB Paddy’s Lament Burger is as big as Chef Joe’s head (pictured above) — It includes 3 LBS. of Black Angus Beef, 1 LB. of Corned Beef, 12 Slices of Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Pickle and 1 LB. of Beer-battered French Fries.

Can this monster finally go down?

Join us tomorrow morning when local competitive eater “Awesome Fat” will attempt to take down this behemoth of a burger in front of a live audience during FOX6′s Real Milwaukee from 9am-10am.

Does the name “Awesome Fat” sound familiar? You may have heard of him. He’s the one that scarfed down 168 ounces of Prime Rib at Ward’s House of Prime during a special taping of Travel Channel’s “Big Beef Paradise” last December.

Here’s are the rules of the Paddy’s Lament Burger Challenge:

One person has 60 minutes to finish the entire burger and fries. If you succeed, the burger is free and you will receive a $50 Mulligans Gift Card, plus your picture will be posted on the ‘Winner’ wall (which is empty).

If you fail the challenge, the burger is $32, and comes with a free to-go box, and your picture will be posted on the ‘Weenie’ wall (it;s full of weenie’s).

Guanajuato Mexican Restaurant in Bay View Moves

Guanajuato Mexican restaurant in Bay View closed its location today at 2301 S. Howell Ave. and will move into its new space just two doors South at 2317 S. Howell Ave.

Guanajuato owner Julio Lopez told me he expects to reopen the new location in two to three days.

In the meantime, another Mexican restaurant, Mr. Webo’s will start renovating the space left by Guanajuato and plans to open in the space at 2301 S. Howell Ave. in three weeks.

Casablanca renovations complete; Grand re-opening Friday night

Casablanca, the Middle Eastern restaurant at 728 E. Brady St. has completed its renovations that has nearly doubled its size.

The newly constructed second-story now includes a banquet space that can accomodate up to 300 guests and a covered terrace over-looking Brady St.

You can see the completed project for the first time Friday night when the restaurant hosts its grand re-opening party with live music and belly dancing.

Milwaukee’s own Solly’s Grille featured on Travel Channel tonight

Solly’s Grille which has been home of the Butter Burger since 1936 will be featured on Travel Channel’s Burger Land tonight, Sept 12th at 7pm CST.

Burger Land host George Motz, author of the book Hamburger America is traveling across America in search of great Mom ‘n Pop burger joints. George and his crew stopped at Solly’s in Glendale in Sept, 2011 to film the segment that will air tonight.

Can’t catch the showing tonight? Don’t worry, Burger Land will air again on Travel Channel this Saturday, Sept 15th at 12pm CST.

New Philly Way Location now open on Brady Street

Update: The Philly Way is now open at 1330 E. Brady Street. The new location hours are Mon – Wed: 11am to 10pm, Thurs – Sat: 11am to 3am, and Sun: Noon to 9pm. The resaturant phone number is (414) 763-8875.

The Philly Way, a popular cheese steak shop in Walker’s Point will open a new restaurant on Brady Street in May, 2012.

According to its Facebook page, the new location will be located about one block west of Farwell St. on the north side of Brady, inside the former “Miss Groove” clothing store.

This would have been Philly way #4 if all of the locations remained open today.

Owner Dave London closed his Cudahy location in August, 2011 after being open for less than a year. And unfortunately, Mr. London had the same luck with a Downtown locale at 222 W. Wells. The Wells Street location closed in late-2009.

The Philly Way’s orignal location in Walkers Point remains strong is doing great business.

Ward’s House of Prime’s 160 oz cut featured on Travel Channel show

Downtown Milwaukee’s very own Ward’s House of Prime, 540 E. Mason Street, will be featured on a special episode entitled, “Big Beef Paradise” on the Travel Channel this Wednesday at 8 p.m. CST.

According to producers, the food show will feature the best places in the country to get big slices of beef, and it will include Ward’s chefs cooking up delicious cuts of choice beef, an interview with owner Brian Ward, and footage from a Prime Rib Eating Contest Ward’s recently hosted. The contest included 3 contestants trying to eat a humongous 160 oz (yes, 10 pounds) cut of prime rib in less than an hour.

The first contestant ever to set a Prime Rib record at Ward's was Dane Kasper.

In early 2010 Dane Kasper decided he wanted to eat 40 ounces of Prime Rib. At the time this size cut of meat was not offered on Ward’s menu so Executive Chef Bill Baumann happily carved the gigantic slab of meat for Dane, and the rest is, well, history. Dane conquered the 40 ounces and thus, “The Baby Dane” was born. Dane would later return to take down “The Great Dane,” 106 ounces of cooked to perfection Prime Rib to earn another spot of Ward’s menu and its “Wall of Fame.”

Ward’s “Wall of Fame” currently pays tribute to 9 previous customers who have conquered eating enormous portions of prime rib. Their caricatures are on the restaurant’s wall and their names are also featured on the Ward’s prime rib menu. The following prices were accurate at the time this blog was posted and prices are subject to change without notice.

The “Big Beef Paradise” episode is also scheduled to air at 11 p.m. on December 21 and at 6 p.m. on December 25 (Christmas Day).

Soups Off; Third Ward’s Soups On Closes

The Third Ward’s Soups On (221 N. Water St.) announced this morning that the restaurant will be closing after nine years in business.

The restaurant made the following announcment vis its facebook page:

“Soup’s On is closed. Mary’s retired. Thanks for the nine years of your patronage. I’ve enjoyed serving and and everyone of you. Have a great 2012!”

This isn’t the first time a restaurant announced its closing via social media. Just last Wednesday we learned of the closing of Marchese’s Olive Pit via its Facebook page.

Bay View’s Sven’s Cafe to open Downtown location March 1

Earlier today I learned that Steve Goretzko, the owner of Bay View’s Sven’s European Cafe and Sven’s Organic Coffee Co. finalized and signed the papers to take over the old Steamer’s Coffee location Downtown at 624 N. Water St.

Steamer’s recently closed its doors this past October.

Steve tells me you can expect to find the same great menu as he offers at his Bay View local. Sven’s serves a hearty breakfast and lunch menu all day long. On the menu you’ll find hot and cold sandwiches, bountiful salads, several daily soups, a case full of fresh bakery, and of course a large selection of coffee and tea drinks.

The new location will serve breakfast and lunch to cater to its Downtown neighbors. The new location is slated to open March 1, 2012. Please stay tuned to MilwaukeeFood.com for more information.
